Hash House Harriers, commonly known as “Hash,” is a non-competitive running community that began in Kuala Lumpur in 1938.

The official name is “Hash House Harriers (HHH),” and it is widely known for its famous slogan:
“A Drinking Club with a Running Problem.”

Hash focuses less on competition and more on:

  • friendship and community

  • outdoor adventure

  • fun and exploration

  • healthy social activities

Unlike traditional races or marathons, Hash runs are usually trail-based and follow marked routes prepared in advance by organizers. Participants run or walk through forests, hills, and outdoor paths while following trail signs and finding the correct route.

Key characteristics of Hash include:

  • Non-competitive running culture

  • Trail and outdoor exploration

  • Strong international community

  • Social gatherings after runs

  • Participation for all fitness levels

  • Unique nicknames known as “Hash Names”

What started in Malaysia has now grown into a global movement with hundreds of Hash chapters around the world. Today, Hash is recognized not only as a running activity, but also as a unique social and cultural community that brings people together through sport, adventure, and friendship.
